2022, Local Library

Why not join your local library this summer and feed your child’s imagination with the Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge!

Norfolk Libraries Service is encouraging people to sign up for its Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge to boost their reading skills during the school holidays.

This year’s theme for the challenge is science and innovation, which will spark children’s curiosity and encourage them to see the science and innovation in everyday objects.

The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every summer holiday throughout the country. It’s run by the national charity The Reading Agency and delivered with the support of public libraries. The challenge is the UK’s biggest free reading promotion for primary school aged children.

Designed to be flexible and accessible to all reading levels, children set their own reading goals and can collect incentives each time they finish a book and collect a medal for completing the challenge.

Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnerships, said: “Last year nearly three quarters of children who took part improved their reading skills.

“This scheme is a fun way of overcoming the summer reading dip that children can experience, making sure they are fully prepared for the new school year ahead.”

Ceri Sumner, Director of Community Information and Learning, said: “We’re keen to keep kids reading during the summer holidays as it’s proven to improve their language skills and helps with the transition between year groups.

“It’s free to take part, and there are lots of ways that the library service can support people, including making recommendations, and giving you quick and easy access to thousands of free books.”

The challenge runs all throughout the summer holidays, you can join your local library, borrow books and sign your children up to the challenge for free.  To find out more about all the ways you can do this visit your local library or online here: Summer Reading Challenge 2022 - Norfolk County Council https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries-local-history-and-archives/libraries/whats-on/summer-reading-challenge where you will also be able to see all the fun, free children’s activities available in our libraries linked to the challenge.
